In Colombia vanilla is grown by an Afro-Colombian community, on the Pacific Coast. The community grows the Planifolia vanilla under agroforestry systems and in the wild, integrating itself in a symbiotic relation with the surrounding nature.
The vanilla orchid has a great presence in the amazonic jungles of Colombia, however it is rarely commercialy cultivated, despite it has a high market value and despite the south american country has the largest genetic base of vanilla varieties in the world. Colombia also has a successful program of reintroducing aromatic endemic vanilla varities into their exotic natural habitat, such as V. Pompona, V. Karen-Christianae, V. Cribbiana, V. Dreslery and V. Planifolia Jacks, among many other.
Starting 2025, the European Union Deforestation-Free Products Law will forbid the import of crops that have been grown on deforested land.
